World Language & Heritage Spanish Placement for 2026

If you are new to TuHS and have studied Spanish before, or if you have never taken Spanish at TuHS but have experience with Spanish being spoken at home, please take the following proficiency tool to help you choose the most appropriate course for Spanish in the 2026-2027 school year.    Remember that this is not a test but instead a way to measure your current level of Spanish.   There are no wrong answers.    Respond as completely as you can, using words, phrases, sentences, or paragraphs if you are able.   Read the instructions carefully. Do not use any other sources (the internet, friends or family members, etc.) to help you with your response.   This can cause an inaccurate suggestion for a course that is not appropriate for your level of Spanish.

When you are done you will need to wait for the score that is given to you.  Write it on your course selection worksheet next to your choice or email your counselor with the score and your course choice.  The chart that follows will help you match the resulting number with the recommended course.

Proficiency Tool Score Recommended course *
1 Spanish 1  or Heritage 1/2
2 Spanish 2 or Heritage 3
3 or 4 Spanish 3 or Heritage 4

*Course descriptions can be found in the APG to clarify how heritage courses are different from World Language courses.

World Language Courses at TuHS

All World Language and Heritage Spanish courses at TuHS contribute to the Arts/Career/World Language elective requirement for graduation. Even though students are not required to take a World Language or Heritage Spanish to graduate, enrollment in World Language and Heritage Spanish course work provides opportunities towards participating in IB courses their junior and senior years, earning college credit, and qualifying for the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy.

IB and World Language Courses

To be considered as an IB diploma candidate upon graduation, you must take an IB level course in the academic area of Language Acquisition. To reach an IB level, a student new to another language or with no previous formal coursework will need to start in level 1 their freshman year. This will ensure that pre-requisites for IB level World Language classes have been met by their senior year. If a student is considering or possibly wants the chance to access the opportunity of IB candidacy in their senior year, it is strongly recommended that they sign up for Spanish 1, French 1 or Heritage Spanish their 9th grade year.

World Language University Requirements

It is recommended for college applicants that all students take 2 years of a World Language in high school. Most four-year universities and colleges, as part of their core entrance requirements, want to see a transcript with completion of the second year of a World Language with a C- or better. Because requirements and how to meet those requirements vary per school, please consult with prospective colleges and universities for each school's specific World Language requirements for admission.

Oregon Seal of Biliteracy

Tualatin High School students who are proficient in a language other than English may be eligible to earn the Oregon Seal of Biliteracy. During their senior year, interested students will be provided with an opportunity to complete a rigorous assessment to measure their ability to listen, speak, read, and write in the partner language. Students who pass this assessment at the level required by the state and the Tigard-Tualatin School District will have their names submitted to the Oregon Department of Education for approval. The Oregon Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students who are truly biliterate, as demonstrated by their ability to comprehend and communicate at an advanced level.
